Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in American men, behind skin cancer. It is the second-leading cause of cancer death in American men. One in every six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime, and the risk increases with age. The good news is that prostate cancer screening isn’t just for finding cancer – it is for stopping it before it starts.
Men over the age of 50 should get regular check-ups and talk with their doctor about how to screen for prostate cancer. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer then you may be at an increased risk. Your doctor may decide that a prostate cancer screening isn’t right for you if you’re over 70 or have other health conditions or risk factors.
Some of the screenings that are available can detect prostate cancer before you display any symptoms, finding prostate cancer early may be when it is most treatable.
